Sildurit series (Silicon Nitride, Si3N4)

Beyond standard insulating grades, Rauschert offers Sildurit E, a breakthrough conductive composite specifically developed for high-precision Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM).

Specifications and Description

Sildurit and Sildurit E represent two distinct directions in silicon nitride technology, differing fundamentally in their electrical properties and machinability. While Sildurit serves as a traditional high-performance insulator, Sildurit E is a specialized conductive composite.

1. Sildurit: Standard Grade Silicon Nitride (Si3N4)
Sildurit is a high-performance structural ceramic sintered under extreme temperature and pressure. Its microstructure, characterized by interlocking needle-like grains, provides exceptional mechanical toughness.

  • Superior Strength & Toughness: Best-in-class mechanical performance designed to withstand high-impact loads.
  • Excellent Thermal Shock Resistance: An extremely low coefficient of thermal expansion ensures reliability during rapid temperature fluctuations.
  • Chemical Inertness: Non-wetting to non-ferrous melts (e.g., Al, Mg) and highly resistant to aggressive acids and alkalis.
  • Electrical Insulation: A volume resistivity of up to 1014 Ω·cm makes it an ideal high-temperature insulator.

2. Sildurit E: Conductive Silicon Nitride Composite
A breakthrough in technical ceramics, Sildurit E was developed to overcome the machining limitations of conventional materials. By integrating a conductive titanium nitride (TiN) phase into the silicon nitride matrix, Rauschert enables advanced electrical processing.
  • EDM Machinability: Specifically engineered for Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM). Unlike traditional ceramics that require costly diamond grinding, Sildurit E supports wire-cutting and spark erosion for intricate, high-precision geometries.
  • Extreme Hardness: With a Vickers hardness of 1800 [HV 0.1], it outperforms most conventional tungsten carbide (WC-Co) grades.
  • Low Inertial Load: Its density is significantly lower than that of tungsten carbide (approx 14.5 g/cm³), making it ideal for high-speed reciprocating components in automated equipment.
